Something you should
know before you get
started. Fitness means
balance. A good training
program should be based
on three elements:
- Cardiovascular exercise
- Strength exercise
- Flexibility
This is when your heart comes into
play. Dancing all night long or riding
your stationary bike are typical cardiovascular
activities, setting your larger
muscle groups in motion. Your body
therefore burns energy and the calories
just fly out! Your heart is
stimulated and strengthened.
For your cardiovascular program,
two options are to be considered:
- Weight bearing exercises
Your feet and legs support your
whole body weight; this will give
strength to your bones. Walking, jogging,
running, stair climbing and
rope jumping are typical weight
bearing activities. For your home
gym, try a treadmill.
- Non weight bearing exercises
Your body is supported when you
exercise; the impact on your back
and joints is reduced. Some non
weight bearing activities will set your
whole body in motion. Typically,
swim- ming, rowing and crosscountry
skiing will work more muscle groups
than just those located in the lower
body. For your home gym, try an
exercise bike, an elliptical crosstrainer
or a rowing machine.
You might discover the runner in
you, or the biker, or just find that
you like mixing it up. Remember,
you want to give your heart a ride
and let the calories go.
